The Mill Race Folk Society

Mill Race Folk Society

Welcome to the WRX Property Group blog! We’ve been looking at some of the fantastic community and cultural opportunities available here in the Tri-Cities (and beyond), and today we’ll be headed to downtown Galt in Cambridge.

The specific location, Mill Race Park, has already popped up in our recent ‘Top 5 Parks in Cambridge’ list (check it out here), and in its description we mentioned a special event that takes place there every summer: the Mill Race Festival of Traditional Folk Music.

Well today, the time has come to forage further into this fascinating topic, and find out more about the fine folk festival and the Mill Race Folk Society that runs it (and other events) every year.

Little Libraries of KW

Little Libraries of KW

Perhaps one day, while walking or driving through Kitchener-Waterloo, you noticed an odd sight: a medium-sized wooden structure standing near the street on someone’s lawn. Perhaps you wondered to yourself what that strange structure could be: Is it a birdhouse?

Is it a plain slab of wood? No, neither! What you’ve discovered is a phenomenon that’s spread throughout Kitchener-Waterloo and the broader Waterloo Region – and far, far beyond. What you’ve discovered is a Little Library.

If you’ve seen one of these structures anywhere in Kitchener-Waterloo, Cambridge, Guelph, and the surrounding Townships, (and odds are you may have seen quite a few), then you’ve seen a ‘branch’ of the Little Libraries of Kitchener-Waterloo.

We need to back up a little, though.

Wellesley Township Heritage and Historical Society

Wellesley Township Heritage and Historical Society

The Wellesley Township Heritage and Historical Society serves the Township of Wellesley in several ways. As its name suggests, it is focused on the heritage and history of the overall Township and each of its constituent communities.

But it does more than that: the Wellesley Township Heritage and Historical Society (WTHHS) brings the past into the present, and preserves them both for the future. The WTHHS was formed in 2007, when Heritage Wellesley Township and the Wellesley Township Historical Society merged in order to better serve the community.

Best Breweries in Kitchener-Waterloo – WRX Top 5

Top 5 Breweries in Kitchener-Waterloo

Hello, and welcome to the latest WRX Property Group Top 5! This week’s topic is one that means a great deal to many a Kitchener-Waterluvian. Every October, the streets of Kitchener-Waterloo are abuzz with festive folk feasting on fine food and imbibing their fair share of carbonated brews, for every October, Oktoberfest comes to the Region.

Indeed, Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest is the largest such celebration outside of Munich (which is where it originated), and over 700,000 visitors (many a beer-lover among them) participate in the Region’s nine-day festivities. While Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest’s official venues are sponsored by Molson Coors Brewing Company, one of the world’s largest brewers, there is also a strong presence of craft breweries here in Kitchener-Waterloo that we will be highlighting today.

Because whether it’s the middle of Oktoberfest, or the start of summer, there are some great options here to enjoy craft beers. Let’s get started!

The Steckle Homestead

The Steckle Homestead

Kitchener-Waterloo is a centre of technological innovation, and with a joint population of 338,208 (as of the 2016 Census), it’s also among Canada’s largest urban areas. But another striking feature of the greater Waterloo Region is the coexistence of urban and rural, primarily reflected in the contrast between the Tri-Cities (Kitchener, Waterloo, and Cambridge) and the surrounding Townships (Wellesley, Wilmot, Woolwich, and North Dumfries).

Right in the heart of Kitchener, however, is a little slice of farm life – and it’s been there for well over a century, serving the community in a variety of capacities. The Steckle Heritage Homestead stands towards the south of Kitchener, just below the bustling Laurentian and Country Hills neighbourhoods, and just above the most rapidly-growing part of the city (including neighbourhoods like Huron Park and Williamsburg).

But while there are many new development projects going on in this region, the south of Kitchener is still home to huge swathes of untapped, natural beauty, as well as some of the Region’s finest parks (including, notably, the Huron Natural Area).

The Steckle Heritage Homestead lies somewhat at the intersection between the urban and suburban life to the north and east, and the more rural living to the south and west. And it’s a true Kitchener wonder.

The AORS Municipal Public Works Tradeshow

The Association of Ontario Road Supervisors

Located in the small community of Thorndale, just outside of London, is a somewhat unassuming building. You might drive past it on your way to Sassy’s and not even realize that this building is the headquarters of the Association of Ontario Road Supervisors – an Association that has an impact, whether large or small, on just about every Ontarian.

Today, WRX Property Group is proud to do our part to bring this important, but relatively small, organization to light. What follows will be a brief explanation of who they are and what they do, after which we’ll dive into the upcoming Association of Ontario Road Supervisors Municipal Public Works Trade Show.

For those of you already familiar with the organization, or just looking to learn more about the Trade Show – feel free to skip the next two paragraphs.

The Best Rated WRDSB Elementary Schools in Kitchener-Waterloo

The Best-Rated WRDSB Elementary Schools in Kitchener-Waterloo

Hello, and welcome to the WRX Property Group website and blog. For families (or future families) looking to buy a home in Kitchener-Waterloo, knowing about the educational opportunities here can be quite important. This month, we’re looking at the 14 top-ranked elementary schools throughout Kitchener-Waterloo (7 from each school board) and writing individual profiles on each of them.

This first group of 7 (and Canadians, particularly Canadian art aficianados, do love a good Group of Seven) consists of schools in the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB); in a couple weeks, we will write profiles on the top 7 schools in the Waterloo Catholic District School Board (WCDSB).

As for this article, it will simply provide a broader overview of the 7 best-rated WRDSB elementary schools. We’ll start with the current top-rated school and working our way down through to number 7 (for the record, there are 107 elementary schools in the WRDSB, though a number of those are in Cambridge and the surrounding Townships).
